An Act Of Kindness

On a trip back to Montreal, this beautiful older lady was sitting across the aisle from me. She wakes to the jarring of the train as we pulled out of the station. She seemed a little confused asking "Are we in Plattsburgh yet?" to no one in particular. "No we are not" I answered with a gentle smile. "Oh right" she said, "We are a ways off before we get there". She gets up, rustles through her things and down the hall she went, without missing a step and unwavering. Several times she does this. I wonder to myself if she needed my assistance and before I can offer any, the conductor is at her side. "I seemed to have lost my purse, did you see it?" The conductor looks around, lift things and looks under the seats. I wanted to be helpful and tell him quietly that she was moving things but that I don't think she had a purse with her. He patiently helps her lower her luggage from the overhead compartment and was assisting her in her search. He asks if she was traveling with someone and she said her son David had put her on the train but doesn't think he came with her. He tells her that he will see what he can do and that he will be back.

As he leaves, a passenger behind her asked if she wanted to call her son and if she had his number. David, her son, was on speakerphone as she asks him if he has seen her purse. We are now surrounded by 4 big, burly, concerned looking conductors. After a few words to his mother, the phone is handed over to one of them as we hear David explain that she did not take her purse for the very reason that she might misplace it. He asks David if anyone is meeting her and if he can kindly let them know to come to the platform to greet her. Everyone sighs with relief, they reassure her that everything is fine and they walked away.

I am hoping that when I need it, someone will lend a hand and treat me with kindness and respect.

It is the small things we do in life that makes us all kinder.
