Avocados are one of my favourite foods, a fruit in fact. I love them smashed on toast with sea salt and nutritional yeast; in raw chocolate pudding for a decadent, guilt-free, dessert; in the most delicious summertime tomato and avocado salad; and, of course, in guacamole. As far as I’m concerned, avocados can do no wrong.

We know they taste delicious, but you might not know some of the many health benefits of avocados. Check out the impressive list below, just to name a few:

1. Cardiovascular Health

Due to their high content of oleic acid, vitamin E, folate, potassium, and phytosterols, avocados have been shown to significantly reduce cholesterol levels, which is the main risk factor for hearth disease.

2. Eye Health

Avocados are packed with lutein, a carotenoid that acts as an antioxidant to help prevent eye disease such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Not only that, but eating avocados helps you absorb more carotenoids in the fruits and vegetables you’re already eating! Add avocados to your salads or make an avocado and blueberry bowl with lime juice to get the biggest bang for your buck.

3. Arthritis

Osteoarthritis is a very painful disease caused by inflammation of the joints. The most common triggers of inflammation are wheat, dairy, animal products, and sugar. Luckily avocado’s high levels of monounsaturated fats, phytosterols and antioxidants like vitamin E, vitamin C, and a variety of carotenoids make them an excellent way to reduce inflammation. Kick those inflammation triggers out of your diet and add in avocados.

4. Great Skin

With its antioxidant carotenoids, vitamin E, vitamin C, and monounsaturated fats, avocados help maintain moisture levels in the epidermal layer of your skin, reduce skin redness and irritation, help guard against photo-aging due to sun exposure, and help in the creation of elastin and collagen, maintaining your skin’s elasticity and firmness. Talk about nature’s beauty product!

5. Weight Loss

Avocados are high in soluble and insoluble fibre, as well as oleic acid, keeping your digestion system running smoothly and slowing the breakdown of carbohydrates in the body, which helps you feel fuller longer. So forget the old adage, an apple a day, and make it an avocado a day for your health!
