Spring here is the sweetest period of the year: it's maple sugar time! 

Get your maple boost with this decadent maple square recipe!



• 2/3 of a cup (150 ml) of fine granulated maple sugar

• 1 ¼  cups ( 310 ml) of dark maple syrup

• 1/2 cup ( 125 ml ) soft butter

• 1/4 cup ( 60 ml ) of brown sugar

• 1 cup ( 250 ml ) of flour

• 2 beaten eggs

• 1/4 cup ( 60 ml ) of soft butter

• 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of flour




1. Preheat over at 200°C/400°F. Butter and line a 23 cm (9 in) square pan with parchment paper.
2. In a saucepan, simmer maple syrup and granulated maple sugar for 5 minutes. Leave to cool on the counter.

3. In a bowl, combine and mix the first quantity of butter (1/2 cup), the brown sugar and the flour and spread that mixture into the pan, pressing it lightly.

4. Bake for 10 minutes at 200 ° C / 400 ° F and remove from oven.
5. Reduce oven temperature to 180 ° C / 350 ° F.
6. In a bowl, whisk the eggs and stir in the mixture of syrup and maple sugar. Continue to whisk and then incorporate the soft butter (60ml) and the flour by sifting it over the bowl while mixing gradually. Pour over the pre-cooked crust.
7. Bake at the bottom of the oven for 10 minutes then put the oven rack in the center and continue cooking for another 20 minutes.   Let the whole thing cool down, cut into squares and enjoy!
